Introduction / History

The Nkukoli are an indigenous ethnic community located in Cross River State, especially around the junction of Ikom, Obubra, and Akamkpa Local Government Areas, including the Iko Ekperem development area. Their language, Nkukoli, also called Ekuri or Lokoli, is an Upper Cross River language within the Benue–Congo branch of the Niger-Congo family.

Their historical development is intertwined with other Upper Cross communities who share longstanding ties through trade, intermarriage, and forest-based subsistence patterns. While detailed written history is limited, their presence in this region is well-established, and their identity continues to be linked strongly to their language and land.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Nkukoli communities are traditionally agricultural, relying on farming of staple crops suited to the rainforest environment. Families often work together in fields, with responsibilities shared among extended kin. Their daily diet draws from locally grown produce and food gathered from the forests.

Family structures emphasize cooperation, respect for elders, and collective decision-making. Cultural practices include storytelling, music, and celebrations tied to harvest periods or significant life events. The forest surrounding their settlements shapes much of their cultural worldview, work rhythms, and community life.

Social interaction with neighboring groups is common, supported by markets, intermarriage, and shared regional customs. While modernization has reached parts of Cross River State, many Nkukoli communities maintain a largely rural, communal lifestyle.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Christianity is the largest religious identity among the Nkukoli. Traditional beliefs continue to influence aspects of daily life, especially in matters concerning the spirit world, protection, and ancestral respect. From a Bible-believing Christian perspective, the gospel offers freedom, hope, and the fullness of life that only Christ provides.

Because Christianity is already widespread, there is opportunity for deeper discipleship, spiritual renewal, and greater engagement in sharing the good news with less-reached groups in surrounding regions.

What Are Their Needs?

Nkukoli communities face physical challenges common in rural Cross River State, including limited access to healthcare, underdeveloped infrastructure, and fluctuating economic stability. Education and transportation remain inconsistent in many areas, affecting opportunities for young people.

Spiritually, existing believers benefit from biblical teaching, strong fellowship, and leadership development. Continued growth in maturity is important so that the Nkukoli church can serve as a gospel force among neighboring groups.

Prayer Items

Pray for strong, mature disciples who live out Christ's love and truth within their communities.
Ask God to strengthen local churches so they grow in unity, teaching, and outreach.
Pray for improved access to healthcare, education, and safe infrastructure throughout Nkukoli areas.
Since the gospel is already present, pray that Nkukoli believers will joyfully join gospel efforts among less-reached communities nearby.
